Solar Tester

If you have been following our content lately, we are sharing some content about devices that may be useful for our installers to sell Window Films.

This time we will talk about that famous little device called “Solar tester”; these devices are used to show in numbers what a customer can feel physically.

These devices can also confirm what the product’s specifications claim to have, which helps customers to prove the products’ originality.

There may be some tricks out there, as the measurement is made at a specific point in the solar spectrum (solar wave) and may omit possible variations that the film has in other parts of the spectrum that alter its performance and do not match what is stated in the specification.

Some brands on the market “cheat” the customer by just measuring and posting a certain infrared wavelength (ie 900-1100nm). This leads to “inflated” values of 99% IR Rejection. Also, other factories may be adding additives on the film that can trick the Testers, which will show fake results in certain point of the wavelength.

An honest and indicative way to measure would be the entire 780nm-2500nm or more than one point (one near and other far) within that wavelength range. Only then can you evaluate the film’s heat rejection performance.

Some companies may use this method to “prove” that their film is superior and better than other brands. However, this way can be unethical as these devices are set to measure only in a point within 900nm-1100nm, that is, only a certain wavelength. The infrared wavelength is 780nm-2500nm.

So again, always be careful when brands say they block 99% of IR rays – this is only measured at a certain wavelength and may not perform as well across the spectrum.
